University Support Program

The University of Southern California provides The MOSIS Service and has provided support to more than 800 accredited academic institutions over the years. The historical term was MOSIS Educational Program (MEP), which supported university undergraduate classes in VLSI design. This program gave students a chance to experience the full cycle of VLSI design, fabrication and testing of integrated circuits. The program also assisted unfunded research by graduate students.

There were three types of accounts, Commercial, MEP Instructional and MEP Research. The MOSIS Service offered free fabrication and packaging in supported technologies for the MEP accounts at accredited institutions in the United States. The MEP Instructional accounts were granted to a professor teaching a registered course with the university for which the student received a grade, had a course curriculum, and finished at the end of the semester. The MEP Research account was used for research projects, thesis work, or individually directed study. The Academic Commercial Account was open to both domestic and foreign accredited Colleges and Universities. Students were not allowed to open nor be responsible for an academic account. Academic Commercial Accounts could access any technology subject to the Foundry’s concurrence. MOSIS recognizes the importance of supporting university VLSI education and research. With decades’ worth of commitment to being an educational resource to U.S. universities, MOSIS is launching a new University Support Program for University participants providing cost free fabrication of VLSI devices and circuits design, and retiring the MOSIS Educational Program (MEP).

Effective immediately, MOSIS continues to support ON Semi C5 0.5 micron process for VLSI design classes for undergraduate courses under new MOSIS University Support Program. This will be the only free fabrication technology going forward. As before the Academic Commercial Account is open to both domestic and foreign accredited Colleges and Universities. Academic Commercial Accounts can access any technology subject to the Foundry’s concurrence. The Academic Commercial Account will no longer automatically expire each year but only after 18 months without placing a purchase order for fabrication services, and the related NDAs will not expire annually either. In other words the Academic Commercial account will be managed similar to the other Commercial accounts.

Academic Commercial accounts will no longer expire each year on September 30. They will expire after 18 months without placing a Purchase Order for fabrication.

Academic Commercial accounts will no longer need a new NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) each year. After reviewing the information on the Customer Account The MOSIS Service will forward the MOSIS Customer Agreement to be executed by the academic institution.

Academic University Support accounts

The University Support program allows students to receive fabricated parts from projects they designed.
MOSIS offers free fabrication and packaging in On Semi C5 0.5 micron process for projects designed by students in classroom settings at accredited institutions in the United States. This account is provided to a professor teaching a registered course for which the student receives a grade, has a course curriculum and finishes at the end of the semester.

Student Questions

Students should familiarize themselves with material on the MOSIS website, carefully read the foundry design rule documents and ask their professor, ie the University Support Manager. Students should NOT utilize the MOSIS Customer support system. Any student inquiries will be forwarded to their University Support Manager.

Packaging is limited to one bonding diagram per design. There is a maximum of 5 packaged parts per design; DIP40, DIP28 or OCP_QFN only. Lids cannot be sealed. Packaging must be ordered when parts are fabricated. There is no longer a requirement to provide a student test report. Add a University Support Manager to the Academic Customer Account
